Today, Skype has released a new update for Windows that introduces a number of great new features. One of those features is the ability of HD video calling. You will of course need a HD webcam and a suitable broadband connection for 1080p video calls. Skype recommends a connection with at least a 2Mbps download speed. But this isn’t the only new feature in Skype version 5.8.

The update also allows you to video calls with friends over Facebook, even if they are not Skype users (Previously, all users were required to be Skype users to video chat over Facebook.) There’s also a new “Push to Talk” feature which allows users to set a hotkey to toggle microphone muting on a Skype call.

In addition, you now have the ability to share your entire desktop or just selected applications with a group of people in a conference call. Group screen sharing is available with Skype Premium, which also includes Group video calling and live chat customer support.

The update is available to download now from the Skype website.
